FACILITIES

Center for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI)

Our Geological Sciences Library is located in the Resource Center at CERI. It includes major geological and geophysical journals, and USGS publications.

A partial list of geological research equipment and facilities includes:

  • Automated Philips x-ray diffractometer
  • gravimeters
  • Global Positioning System
  • a Dionex ion chromatograph
  • a Varian atomic absorption spectrophotometer
  • magnetometers
  • university-maintained SEM and TEM laboratory
  • microcomputer lab
  • cathode luminescence
  • seismological observatory
  • research computer facilities and work stations
  • petrographic sample preparation and optical facilities
  • electron spin resonance spectrometer
  • labs for wet chemistry

We are the home of the Center for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI), a center of seismic research that provides the public with information on earthquakes, seismic safety, and a 40-station radio telemetry network extending into adjacent states, providing educational

opportunities for those who wish to concentrate in geophysics (seismology).

Total geological and CERI facilities consist of 34,000 sq. ft. of space designated for lecture, laboratory instruction, and research.

Physical Geography Lab

The department has a physical geography laboratory, which houses equipment for field based studies in surface water hydrology, biogeography, soils, sediment texture analysis, and climatology. It is available to all students and faculty. The lab is also used for the field studies course as well as other classes.

Johnson Hall Auditorium

The main auditorium classroom is completely equipped for multimedia presentations and many of the faculty take full advantage of the facility. The auditorium seats 170 students and is regularly used for introductory level classes. The department also has mobile multimedia equipment for use in other classrooms. There are numerous wall maps and a slide collection that are used in lectures.

Geography Seminar Room

The seminar room is used frequently for guest speakers, upper division undergraduate level courses, and graduate seminars. New multimedia equipment has been purchased for this room and its use will continue to increase. The department also has several offices for graduate students. There is a computer lab for faculty and graduate students, which contains a multimedia computer with a scanner, digital camera, slide scanner, and CD-R. This lab also contains several Sun Workstations.

GIS & RS

The Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing Lab is supported by the University of Memphis. The lab serves as a focal point for contract work, student and faculty research, and classroom instruction. The goal of courses and research has been to integrate field-based research with geospatial analytical techniques.

Students and faculty have access to a variety of tools in and out of the lab. The campus has an ESRI site license. The GIS & RS lab supports both Arcview and Arc/Info.

The remote sensing component consists of several sources of data. The department has an extensive collection of aerial photographs of Tennessee. There are also satellite images of the local area. Image analyses are carried out using ER Mapper, Image Analyst for Arcview, and in Arc/Info.
