Color Spectrum
1. This figure shows a beam of white light hitting a screen.

2. This Figure shows what
happens when that beam passes through a diffraction grating. A
diffraction grating can be a sheet of metal with thin vertical lines
cut into it. As the beam passes through the diffraction grating
different wavelengths of light are directed in different directions.

3. When gas is excited by
passing an electric current through it for example, it radiates at
characteristic wavelengths that can be seen using the diffraction
grating.
