GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SCIENCE
Research
Members of the University of Memphis have and are currently engaged in various national and international GIScience research projects. These projects involve members of multiple units and colleges. There are also a number of departments, and research centers with increasing interest in GIScience research. The following lists current research projects and their web pages for additional information.
Dr.Esra Ozdenerol uses her GIS expertise to study medical geography, spatial analytical methods and modeling, landscape ecology, community planning, and public participation GIS. Her recent project is analyzing the spatial and temporal spread of cancer in Florida.
Dr.
Hsieng.-te Kung uses GIS in areas of water resources,
urban hydrology, urban physical environment, land-surface system, fluvial
geomorphology, landform and terrain analysis, and Asia - China.
Dr. Thad Wasklevics ‘research involves the examination of biophysical processes, forms, and human-induced changes in river ecosystems. The studies include the use of GIS, remote sensing, GPS mapping, and other field data collection techniques. Current study areas include islands in the Mississippi River, mountain riparian species in Arizona, and bottomland hardwood forests along the Hatchie River in western TN.
Dr.Arleen Hill is using GIS technology as a tool to map, model, and communicate how and why people and places are impacted by exposure to hazards and disasters.
Dr.Roy Van Arsdale applies GIS to tectonics, structural geology, and geomorphology with particular interest in neotectonics and paleoseismology of the central US and Australia.
Dr.Michael Ellis uses GIS in the generation of synthetic landscapes as a combined function of tectonic and surface processes along the San Andreas fault and model active deformation in the New Madrid seismic zone, using GPS and boundary-element techniques.

Center for Community Criminology
and Research
Cynthia Martin is the Director of Community Information Project at the center
for Community Criminology and Research. This is the website of the Center for
Community Criminology and Research, a UM center providing comprehensive research
support to regional law enforcement and criminal justice agencies, and other
community-based organizations. Access to the Shared Urban Data System (SUDS)
is through this website. SUDS is an information portal to multiple databases
of spatial, statistical and tabular data for analytical and information processing.
Child Health Data Consortium
This website supports the Child Health Data Consortium, a grant-funded initiative
to facilitate the improvement of child health planning in Memphis and Shelby
County. This website provides the foundation for a comprehensive health data
infrastructure for public health planning, implementation and evaluation.
An important feature of this website is the interactive GIS mapping and query
system of the comprehensive database of local child health and health-related
information. The interactive mapping feature is scheduled to come online
in December 2003.
Youth Resources Information
System
The Center for Community Criminology and Research maintains an Internet-based
information retrieval system of resources for youth and their families for
use by the local Youth Council and Workforce Investment Board. The information
is available in multiple formats including a detailed directory available through
interactive maps.
The Office of Institutional Research employs a number of GIS maps to give their clientele a spatial view of key data elements.

The University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS) is
a non-profit organization of universities and other research institutions
dedicated to advancing our understanding of geographic processes and spatial
relationships through improved theory, methods, technology, and data.
