Course Description and Objectives:

Risks due to natural and human induced hazards have increased during recent decades. Preparedness, mitigation, and education efforts all rely on the accurate identification and quantification of the hazards and risks affecting people and places. The reduction of risk to levels which are accepted by society requires a foundation of reliable risk assessments. This course will focus on the aspects of risk management and reduction related to how risks are measured and analyzed. The course will explore the interaction between nature, society, and technology as we quantify a variety of risks and discuss how those risks may be effectively reduced. The course will rely on a selection of event specific assessments to investigate the challenges

Through examining multiple types of hazards and methods of risk assessment and analysis students will:

  1. Explore the data, methods and models used to measure and describe risk
  2. Conduct risk assessments for individual and multiple hazards
