Course Description and Objectives:
Natural and technological events continue to impact people and places across the globe. This course draws upon hazard and disaster experiences to introduce the nature, impact, and social responses to environmental hazards. Focus is placed on the relationship between nature, society, and technology as we discuss how people and places perceive, experience, and cope with environmental hazards.
Through examining the physical and/or technological origins, impacts, and responses to specific hazards the course meets four objectives or goals:
- Introduce the range and type of environmental hazards including their geographic distribution
- Examine the (natural and societal) causes and consequences of hazards
- Explore responses by individuals and society on spatial scales ranging from local to global
- Identify future directions for hazards research and policy
