Abstract:
In order to take our understanding of the enigmatic seismic hazard in the central US to a new level, it would be very desirable to have information only obtainable from a deep borehole observatory. Because of the expense and risk involved in establishing a sound scientific borehole observatory, however, a much larger project than any individual researcher could probably accomplish is indicated. Therefore, as a first step toward developing a community-supported borehole project, our project would bring together regional scientists with scientists from other regions experienced with borehole projects and likely stakeholders from industry and science funding organizations. The goal of the workshop is twofold. First to define scientific targets and priorities for a borehole observatory in the central US. Second to define a strategy to best implement an observatory.
